Kate Bock – supermodel. A real life Cinderella story, this Vancouver native went from working at Dairy Queen to gracing the coveted pages of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue in a matter of years. Appropriately dubbed Bockstar by Maxim Magazine in her recent editorial with them, you’ll have seen Kate in Victoria’s Secret, L’Oreal, Kose, Guess, Elle Italia and GQ (to name a few). Read on to discover the skin care, nutrition and fitness secrets that keep this beauty swimsuit ready all year round.
“My skincare routine always starts with removing my makeup – I use Clinique Take The Day Off Makeup Remover For Lids, Lashes & Lips. Then I cleanse with Shu Uemura Beauty Cleansing Oil and finish it all off with Mun Aknari Brightening Youth Serum. It’s a Japanese Rose Facial oil that’s super moisturizing and makes my skin feel so smooth and glowy.
For travelling, I am lucky that one of my skin care clients, Kose, gives me an amazing gift bag when I shoot with them. They make sure to give me my favorite face mask, AQMW Facial Mask Duo, which I use regularly after long flights. All of their products absolutely make my skin feel hydrated and vibrant.
I also always have my Kai Perfume Oil with me. I have a few of the small roller travel sizes and they are each stashed in a different bag so that I always have the fragrance wherever I go, I love it!
When I’m out in the sun on vacation or shooting on location I use my Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protection Cream+ Broad Spectrum SPF 50+ For Face. I always make sure I have a little bottle with me.
When it comes to full body care my staples are baby oil and coconut oil. I love to use organic coconut oil as a moisturizer on my body. I also love to exfoliate with the Body Scrubs from Sabon. They have bigger rock salts and really make my skin so smooth.
For Sports Illustrated, you kind of have to be ready to go at all times. They keep everything very secret and sometimes you only know you’re going on a trip with them a few days in advance! So I’m always bikini ready with a wax. Thankfully I don’t have to worry about always being perfectly tanned – they always have great makeup artists who will bronze you up on set.
For makeup, I like to keep it pretty natural with a little mascara, a little blush, and a little lip balm. My list of staples is pretty small! I use Maybeline Full ‘N Soft Mascara in Very Black, RMS Lip2Cheek in Promise, and Eucerin Aquaphor Lip Repair or Fresh Sugar Lip Treatment SPF 15 in Rose. I also love Lancôme Effacernes Anticerne Concealer in Prcelaine II and Kevin Aucoin Sculpting Powder. I discovered how big of a difference contouring can make. Contouring and good eyebrows. I’m definitely not able to do it the way the pros can, but I love how those two touches really make my eyes and face pop!
I get my hair colored at Wonderland Salon in New York. I found a great colorist there that does such a good job at keeping my hair fresh but always very, very natural. That’s important to me. I let the hairdressers on set give me trims here and there when they feel I need it, otherwise I don’t really get haircuts! In terms of styling I like loose waves. So my favourite hair tool is definitely a curling iron!
I sweat daily, and so I wash my hair daily. I know that’s not typically recommended but it works for me! I just use good old Pantene shampoo and conditioner – I like the smell and the way those products make my hair feel. Otherwise I just use Moroccan Oil on the ends of my hair when I feel they’re dry. I love the smell of that stuff. I also use their shampoo and conditioner when feel my hair is really dry.”
“My philosophy when it comes to eating, nutrition, and body image all comes down to balance. Finding the balance with what I eat and working out is what works for me. I don’t do juice cleanses or detox or anything like that. I just try to stay consistently healthy and on a good page so that I don’t feel the need to press the restart button. I restrict more when I feel I need to and let myself have chocolate when I want it. I live the ‘you can have anything in moderation’ life. But a healthy diet has always been part of my lifestyle, my mom always bought organic and we were very healthy in the house.
I do a lot of swim and lingerie work so in general, to feel my best, I drink lots of water and avoid any breads or glutinous products. I’m allergic to dairy so I’ll stay clear of all dairy products and drink almond milk instead. Also, it’s so important to get LOTS of sleep – being sleep deprived and feeling exhausted is the worst way to show up at work.
For jobs I always try to bring all my own food. You just never know what you’re going to get on set and I like to be prepared. It can be hard on location, but even still I try to sneak to a grocery store and get my own things! I try to keep sliced almonds in my purse to have on hand, instant oatmeal for breakfast when traveling, and protein shake packs to make on the go.
I would love to cook but I don’t live anywhere regularly enough to buy groceries that wont go bad, so my fridge is pathetically empty most of the time! That being said, when I have the time my go to breakfast is usually a little organic instant oatmeal with some sliced almonds and some cacao. Or else I’ll have egg whites with avocado and turkey.”
“I love to sweat. I love a good work out. I was definitely very active in sports growing up, so I think it’s just become a part of my life in New York and in this industry. It’s something I do with friends, for my body, and for my head. I do what I crave and I feel better afterwards.
I basically work out every day in one way or another. I don’t think there’s just one thing that makes a workout good – I like to mix it up. Some days I’m feeling I need the stretch and sweat of a hot yoga class, and some days I want the high intensity and heat rate from spin class. I love variety. So I like to switch it up with spin at SoulCycle, hot yoga at Modo Hot Yoga, pilates and barre at Flex Studios, running…you name it.
I shoot for swim and lingerie all year, I get booked last minute, and you never know when VS or SI will call you up with a job. There’s really no time to not be ready! So working out on the go is very important to me since I’m always traveling. I try to get a session in before or after work at the hotel gym or with a run on the beach.
The best advice I’ve received when it comes to taking care of my body is that you’ll never regret a good workout, to drink lots of water, and to moisturize, moisturize, moisturize! So here’s my advice to all the young girls out there who are looking to get in bikini body shape: just stay healthy and know that you do have to work hard and stay dedicated. There is no magic pill. It’s all about being conscious and working hard and then with time you’ll get there!”
